Curriculum Overview
Spring Brook Lower
Curriculum Intent
- Being independent
- Working with support in my community
- Volunteering in my community
With this in mind the curriculum is underpinned by the intent to maximise the ability for every child to live as independently as possible. We aim to equip our children with the knowledge and skills to engage fully in the wider community and to contribute to it through employment and voluntary work. Integral to this aim is the development of communication skills, independence, resilience and life skills which are taught through explicit lessons as well as being embedded throughout the curriculum in all subject areas. To achieve this, we seek to offer an engaging, fun and relevant curriculum (based on the National Curriculum) that is flexible to the needs of our children, which reflects EHCP targets and supports their wellbeing.
To support the holistic approach to the curriculum a ‘Golden Thread’ runs through all aspects of the school day. The ‘Golden Thread’ is taken from a structured programme, Talk About for Children, which allows children to develop social skills, emotional literacy and improved mental health. The programme uses a hierarchical method starting with the development of self-esteem and self-awareness moving on to developing social skills and finally friendship skills and assertiveness. Each academic year children revisit the themes and build on prior learning.
By the end of this Key Stage 2 we would expect children to demonstrate the following benchmarks in these key areas:

Our curriculum is a broad and balanced curriculum, that focuses on the individual learner, as opposed to a ‘one size fits all’ approach.
The unique nature of our learners means that, within the parameters of the wider curriculum, we are able to create bespoke, personalised learning programmes that take an array of different things into consideration, such as a young person’s specific needs and/ or interests.
